The main causes of job stress in the correctional environment are: a) Very high pressure of work- It has been seen that in most of the correctional facilities, the inmate-correctional officer ratio is not proper. Facilities do not employ the adequate number of officers to save money. They face a heavy toll as they have to do overtime when others are absent. b) No autonomy- There is significant amount of job stress due to lack of autonomy. Autonomy is seen in two areas namely, skill discretion and decision authority. In both areas the correctional have little to no power in taking any decision.
